The Toyota Camry is a D-segment sedan that has been the choice of many Malaysian drivers for decades. However, its reputation has taken a toll due to it being considered an “uncle’s car”. Well, Toyota has refreshed the Toyota Camry with modern, aggressive styling, along with engaging driving characteristics thanks to its Toyota Global New Architecture (TNGA) platform. The Toyota Camry goes against sedans like the Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and Volkswagen Passat.
Toyota Camry Variants
In Malaysia, the Toyota Camry is only offered in one variant: the Camry 2.5V. Toyota has decided to simplify its offering in the segment due to the shrinking demand for D-segment sedans in the market.
Toyota Camry Pricing
The price of a new Toyota Camry in Malaysia starts from RM188,763. Although many would consider this to be on the pricier side for a Japanese car, Toyota has improved various aspects of the Camry from its build quality to performance with an aim to compete with even its European counterparts.
Colors Available
There are five colors available on the Toyota Camry in Malaysia: Platinum White Pearl Mica, Red Mica, Silver Metallic, Graphite Metallic, and Burning Black CS GF.
Interior
With its bump in price, the Toyota Camry provides an impressive list of interior features. For starters, it has a smart entry and push start system, smooth black leather seats, Optitron meter combination illumination, with a 7-inch color TFT multi-information display (MID) and 10-inch color head-up display, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel which has power tilt and telescopic adjustment with memory function.
It also has an Illuminated Entry System with lights on the push start button, door, footwell, inner door handle, and instrument panel. Additionally, there is an electrochromic inside rear-view mirror, auto up/down power windows with jam protection, rear armrest with cupholder, a wireless phone charger, portable tire pump, USB charging ports, and a luggage tray. Cooling is handled by a dual-zone automatic climate control with rear air conditioning vents,
Exterior
On the exterior, the Toyota Camry has automatic Bi-LED projector headlights with LED turn signals, LED rear combination lights, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), hydrophilic wing mirrors with auto-retractable, reverse link, and memory function, automatic wipers with rain sensors, as well as a dual-muffle exhaust system.
Cabin Space
The Toyota Camry 2.5V measures 4,885 mm long, 1,840 mm wide, and 1,455 mm tall. It also has a luggage capacity of 493-liters which is expandable with its foldable rear seats.
Infotainment system
Media in the Malaysian version of the Toyota Camry is controlled on an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen display infotainment system with a 9-speaker JBL audio system.
The engine in the Toyota Camry is a 2AR-FE 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine with Dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (Dual VVT-i) and Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS). It produces a max power of 184 PS at 6,000 rpm and a max torque of 235 Nm at 4,100 rpm. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission with Super Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission (ECT) and sequential shifter. This transmission is Toyota’s variation on the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The Camry consumes 10.4 L/100 km of fuel and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.
Being Toyota’s flagship sedan, the Toyota Camry 2.5V is well equipped with modern safety features as well as the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). The basic safety features include Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), front and rear parking sensor with Electric Parking Brake (EPB), seven SRS airbags, ISOFIX tether, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) with pretensioner and force limiter seat belts.
Advanced safety features in the TSS suite include Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) for all speeds, and Automatic High Beam. Other security features include an alarm system with immobilizer, siren with a backup battery, cabin sensors, speed auto door lock, as well as premium security and solar film.
Despite its high price, the Toyota Camry is a great D-segment sedan. It has plenty of equipment and safety features, not to mention excellent ride quality and comfort thanks to its TNGA platform.
